For data to be completely safe, it should be stored in three locations at all times. First, it is stored in whatever machine you are actually using—usually a personal computer or laptop for individuals, and often an onsite server for businesses. Secondly, the data should be stored locally but in a separate piece of hardware that is very difficult to destroy. We recommend a fireproof, waterproof, shockproof, and pressure-proof external hard drive called an ioSafe. Thirdly, your data should be stored in a secure yet accessible offsite location. There are several such services available, and we will guide our clients through the process of figuring out which service is right for their business.
Lafayette PC continually monitors the backups to make sure the systems are working and the data is being recorded and saved. If three locations sounds redundant, that’s because it is—redundancy is built into the system on purpose, so that if one system fails, another system still has the data. We can’t be too repetitive when it comes to protecting our client’s business.
